Atlanta Receives $2 Million Grant to Facilitate Cleanup of Chattahoochee Brick Site

The Chattahoochee Brick Company, established in 1878 in northwest Atlanta, operated on the eastern bank of the Chattahoochee River.

After the closure of the brickworks in 2011, efforts by The Trust for Public Land to purchase the land for a public park were unsuccessful.

In 2016, Lincoln Energy Solutions from South Carolina aimed to acquire the property for a shipping facility, sparking controversy among preservationists.

Eventually, the company purchased 45 out of the 75 acres of the site in June of that year.

In 2021, Norfolk Southern initiated development on the property via a lease from Lincoln Energy, planning to build a refueling station, which faced opposition from preservationists and environmental activists. However, in February of the same year, Norfolk Southern announced their decision to abandon the construction of a rail terminal at the location.

Luke Crawford of Cumming, GA said “The City of Atlanta eventually purchased the property for $26 Million to ensure it is never developed.”

According to the EPS, the Chattahoochee Brick site is presently filled with discarded batteries, debris from demolitions, faulty bricks, and waste produced during the brick-making operations spanning from 1870 to 2010. This contamination has introduced harmful pollutants such as heavy metals and petroleum products into the area, potentially posing health risks.

This $2,000,000 grant will go a long way towards cleaning up the site.
